He was about to embark on a new marriage with his wife Edith and his old 52 Chevy became a casualty in the transaction.

Neil clearly remembered the salesman's comment at the time in detail when he asked, "why is  a young guy like you buying a new car?"

He didn't have to ask...

THESE ARE FIVE SONGS THAT DESERVE TO BE HEARD OVER THE RADIO OF AN OLD TRUCK

The country sound was never my strong suit, but I have not been immune to the charm of old school country songs after decades of exposure to them.

feb12-50trkbimgp6886-1Farm kids have many advantages over city kids. They learn the value of honest, hard work and practical problem-solving early in life plus they encounter and embrace large doses of responsibility on a daily basis.

They also get to operate large machinery on a regular basis and drive vehicles long before their city cousins even get a learner's permit.

Kevin Clews was one of those farm kids and this 1950 IHC truck was one of those farm vehicles.

THE FIRST TIME FOR A TEENAGER IS THE MOST MEMORABLE: MY STORY

feb12-austimgp7390-2We advance into adulthood by degree, and every one of the degrees is a first time that cannot be duplicated- or get a do-over, no matter how much we would like to change our personal history.

So we romanticize the clumsy moments and brash decisions of youth as we get older and view our teenaged pasts in a nice golden hue.

It may shave several layers of reality off the actual events but it makes our younger years more glamorous and heroic in a Paul Simon 'Kodachrome' kind of way.

One thing that never changes in my memories is my first car.
