FEBRUARY 2012 COURTIN' AND WEDDIN' CARS: 1971 OLDS CUTLASS – KEEPING IT ALL IN THE FAMILY

feb12-71oldsimgp6762-1Larry Robinson knew this car long before he owned it because he was there when his grandfather purchased this brand new 1971 Olds Cutlass.

Larry remembered, "it was only his third car and he paid cash at the time so the sales guys told him he must have pulled it out of his mattress.

That was the first chapter in Larry's lifelong association with the Olds but he knew from Day 1 that he loved the car.

Studebaker was in serious financial whitewater by 1963. In fact they were on life support with a guy hovering around ready to pull the breathing tubes on the once proud car maker.

They had one Hail Mary left in the playbook and it came in the form of the Avanti. This was a classic sports car with disc brakes and a great power to weight with the supercharger option.

It wasn't enough to save Studebaker but that last Hail Mary pass they took left a car for the ages.,,

and an mscc Star of the Day from the Summer of 2011.

Long term mscc readers are well aware of the "wife and old cars are eternal enemies" stance in many narratives, but this 1956 Pontiac story is the large exception to the rule.

It began in the mid 1960s when Peter Friesen met his future wife Kathy.
