WE PICK THE TOP 40 DRIVING SONGS OF ALL TIME: THE FINAL FOUR

We have had a lot of fun with our Top 40 driving songs of all time. The first 36 are still onsite in our cartunes section. We’ll say it again- your choices may vary, and we can still live with that likelihood.

But it all boils down to “A” number one, top of the heap.

So here we go with the final four.

Number Four on our list is ‘Driver’s Seat’ by Sniff N the Tears. This song was released in 1978 and quickly became a new anthem for Lead- Foot Anonymous. The song has a nimble sports car feel to it when it picks up momentum as it races along. Clever use of a simple drum beat melds with a keyboard/ guitar combination that pushes ‘Driver’s Seat’ well past the speed limit by song’s end. It definitely belongs in the final four car songs.

Number Three on our list was tough because ‘Highway Star’ will take the checkered flag on a lot of people’s driving song list. British rockers Deep Purple may drive on the wrong side of the road by North American rules, but they were on the right side of the road with this car song classic. ‘Highway Star’ has a hormone fuelled frantic energy to it. It feeds off all of the reasons that young male drivers are voted most likely to die in a car crash every year by insurance companies.

Number Two on our list is almost an automatic number one on every list for much the same reason as ‘Highway Star’.Radar Love’ by Golden Earring is also about cars, girls and the fastest way to drive one to see the other. Young love is always in a hurry and ‘Radar Love’ is a warp drive kind of hurry. The big bass behind this song forces you to want to head down the road in a humongous cloud of tire smoke - even if you are no longer a love-sick puppy with a motivational song and an ultra-heavy foot to get you there fast. ‘Radar Love’ is a driving song for all ages. It’s musical Viagra with a steering wheel for any guy.

Just when you thought that we broke through the speed of sound with our last three choices, we hit number one. Then we slow things down because we have hit the ultimate driving song and we want to enjoy the ride. There can be no bigger driving song than ‘Route 66’ by Nat King Cole Trio. The song was recorded in 1946 in the upbeat mood of a post-war world. The best way to get across most of America in this pre-interstate world was the famous long and winding road known as Route 66.

Nat King Cole made it the coolest trip on the planet with his homage to the open road, and we have to make it our pick as the best driving song ever made.
