WE PICK THE TOP 40 DRIVING SONGS OF ALL TIME PART 6 (# 14-10)

top 40 imgp5362We have closed in on the top of the list with this installment. For those of you that arrived late to this movie, we have all of our previous installments onsite in our Star Car Tunes section.

We included them so our readers can decide if we are actually brain-dead, or just a little slow, with our previous choices.

Number 14 on our list is ‘Me and Bobby McGee’ by Kris Kristofferson, as opposed to Janis Joplin. Kris had a big advantage over Janis because Kris co- wrote the song. The Kristofferson version also appeared in the iconic James Taylor open road movie ‘Two-lane Blacktop’. The song may be about hitchhikers, but the movie was all about a car journey across America.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8ZkkKfg_Rw

Number 13 is 'La Grange by ZZ Top. Yeah we know, it’s a song about a whorehouse in Texas, but this song has fast in its DNA. The driving guitar riffs in ‘La Grange’ make a listener want to introduce the pedal to the metal and beyond. You have to fight the urge to drive rapidly every time the song comes over the radio. Those Texas boys also had to fight other urges when they got to the town of La Grange.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vppbdf-qtGU

Number 12 is ‘See the USA in Your Chevrolet’ by Dinah Shore. The song was part of a GM ad campaign in 1952, but it became more than a car ad for a new generation of road warriors. New concepts like freeways and suburbs were a big part of post-war North America, and faster cars got them to work and summer holiday destinations in a hurry.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGZvQoPxhNs

Number 11 is ‘Drive’ by Incubus. The song is likely also on a list of songs to be dissected by Grade 11 English classes for a deep metaphorical life message. We say screw that; it’s a comfortable driving song that works well when you are not in a hurry to get to Point B.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRUf30Afcyo

Number 10 is our first member of the Top 10 list of driving songs, so why not include a song from a motorcycle movie. Nobody said that ‘Born to be Wild’ had to be about a Harley. Steppenwolf were not specific either when they recorded their homage to the open road, so we want ‘Born to be Wild’ on our top 10 driving song list. Most people are “out on a highway” and “lookin’ for adventure” with four wheels on the pavement rather than two, so we hijack ‘Born to be Wild’ to our driving list with the best of intentions.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdiWEmTpwCY
