CARTUNES-'CAN THE CAN' SUZI QUATRO RELEASED 1973

my star larger new radio-all the hits 2Suzi Quatro was a placeholder in 1973 when she released ‘Can the Can’. Janis Joplin was three years past completion of her plan to live fast, die young, and leave a good looking- well at least a corpse.

There was a vacancy in the hard ass rock and roll bitch category and it was unlikely to be filled by Laurie Partridge.

So the door was open for Suzi Quatro to gain a temporary hold on the title until Anne and Nancy Wilson grabbed the job when Suzi decided to nuke her musucal career for a gig as Fonzie’s girlfriend on Happy Days.

The result was the complete annihilation of her musical credibility and brief fame on a forgettable 70s sit-com.

It probably wasn’t worth it.

Anyhow, before Suzi found herself traveling down the wrong fork in the road, she recorded ‘Can the Can’. This song was basically an anthem rock special with a leather-bound female vocalist instead of a leather-bound androgynous male vocalist. Thus it carried the young male vote very well. The song was about a potential turf war over a guy and the possibility of a catfight between two women to settle the issue; “So make a stand for your man honey, Try and can the can”.

What’s not to love about that concept for a guy?

Hard driving guitar and drums met raw- edged Suzi Quatro vocals- ‘Can the Can' was a marriage made in heaven for a grateful rock nation of young male followers.

Then she went on Happy Days and the dream died.
