STAR CAR TUNES “WHAT DOES IT TAKE”:JUNIOR WALKER AND THE ALL STARS CHARTED JUNE 21 1969

my star larger new radio-all the hits 2There is a semi-classic B movie from 1975 called Aloha Bobby and Rose and it starred Paul LaMat-the guy who drove the yellow 32 Ford in American Graffiti. This time around Paul was driving another automotive icon-a 68 Camaro.

It was a lukewarm movie full of some great cars but one thing really stood out-the soundtrack. What does it Take by Junior Walker and the All Stars was the high point of a phenomenal play list in this movie.

Released in April 1969 this classic rose to # 4 in the charts by June powered by one of the best opening sax performances ever heard on AM radio.

Junior had been playing in a band since he was fourteen years old and the experience clearly paid and peaked with this song. It’s got a pretty basic 60s R&B theme going-guy’s on his way out the door but he’s clinging to the handle on the way out

“I tried, I tried, I tried, I tried,in every way I could,to make you see how much I love you. Ooo, I thought you understood. So you gotta make me see, what does it take to win your love for me?Gonna blow again for ya”-then the magic starts.

When Junior picks up the sax and starts that incredible riff.

If you have to pick one classic soul song that’s built around a saxophone don’t look too hard-the search begins and ends with one song…

“What does it Take” by Junior Walker and the All Stars. It’s so good it’ll make you want to rent the movie.
