MYSTAR CARTUNES: LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY- DONNA SUMMER Released: Dec. 5 1975
The disco plague was still in its infancy in 1975 as an unsuspecting pop music audience had yet to feel the full impact of this soul-sucking musical experience. One of the first major disco soldiers to hit the beach was sultry songstress Donna Summer and she was a good choice to win the hearts, minds and hormonal frenzy of a young male audience.
“Love to love you baby” was a simple composition with a simple proposition: A very hot female vocalist was going to moan and groan her way through a tune that would get the undivided attention of every guy on the planet. The main thrust of the song was an open confession from Summer that she would “ love to love you” and the message in the music was a multiple series of adventures in this department.
The most important part of the song for most male listeners was Donna Summer’s unique ability to convey the heat of the moment in song. It didn’t hurt one bit that Donna Summer was one of the hottest looking songstresses of the 70s. The visual of Donna Summer and the moan and groan audio in the song made the journey into disco music a lot more fun for a legion of young male fans of the song and the singer.
The overt sexual overtones of “ Love to love you baby” ensured that guys would be lulled into a false sense of horniness and would never know what hit them when the rest of the less acceptable Disco Army arrived and slaughtered Top 40 music for the balance of the 70s.
But at least Donna Summer provided a little pleasure before the pain with this song.
