SUMMERTUNES “SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME”-GARY LEWIS AND THE PLAYBOYS #2 AUG. 21 1965

Consider these lyrics: “walk along the lake with someone new, Have yourself a summer fling or two,”.

Does that strike you as anything close to a healthy relationship? That’s how Gary Lewis kicked off summer in June 1965.

Betting money goes to anybody that put 20 bucks on “girl wasn’t around by summer 1966”.

Gary Lewis did quite a few songs about summer separation and in every one the theme was the same-he wouldn’t see her for months, she’s going to some great vacation spot while he’s pumping gas back home.

Plus she can go out on dates in this exotic summer locale but he trusts her implicitly. Is that not the biggest disaster waiting to happen since your late Uncle Marvin looked out the window, saw the tornado and kept reading his newspaper?

Anyhow,45 years ago to the day Gary rode this song to #2 -capturing the entire ‘schmoe’ segment of the male record buying public in the process. Gary clearly had a huge buy-in from these losers with lyrics like “When the summer moon is on the rise, And you’re dancing under starlit skies, Please don’t let the stars get in your eyes, just save your heart for me”.

You pray that somebody threw the keys to the gun cabinet away when Gary and his posse of dangerously unrealistic guys finally figured out "vacation girl’s" summer agenda.
