SUMMERTUNES "ISLAND IN THE SUN" WEEZER-RELEASED AUGUST 28 2001

This song proves that classic summer songs weren’t the exclusive domain of the 20th century-Weezer released this uplifting little tune at the end of August 2001.

Like most good summer songs this one can make a 2 hour wait for a tow truck in the middle of winter a little warmer “on an island in the sun, we’ll be playing and having fun, cause it makes me feel so fine”.

'Island in the Sun' starts with a retro chorus-no word on whether Weezer was mocking that sound or using it in good faith. That doesn't matter-these guys do it well...

It may not fend off hypothermia but it’ll give off mental warmth.

Songs like “Island in the Sun” are designed to simply pick up a bad day no matter what season you’re in but the words “holiday, sun, and golden sea”-these are good clues that Weezer wasn’t talking about the Christmas season.

Summer songs are literally like a day at the beach because...unless the beach is in Antarctica it’s pretty hard to have a bad time in the sun and sand. That's pretty obvious.

Which begs the question-why are there so few definitive summer songs in the 21st century?

Did we get too serious about global warming or did we simply get too serious?

At least Weezer did their part to help us lighten up a bit in this new century.
