SUMMERTUNES ‘HEATWAVE” BY MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS RELEASED JULY 9 1963

Summer 2010 is definitely just kicking off but any Summertunes list wouldn’t be complete without this classic single from July 1963.

This is a summer song at its hottest released in the summer’s hottest month- that's a combination you are going to miss when it’s mid winter and your car won’t star so burn this time of year into your permanent memory for surviving those brutal January nights.

Heatwave was more than an ode to a season-Martha clearly had something going on in her off stage life with all this “burning inside” stuff.

But Heatwave is a summer song classic. The title of the song, the Motown energy behind it-this was designed to get hammock slugs out to the beach at warp speed.

If you didn't react to this song in July 1963 then you must have been a guest star in a coroner's office.

It’s pretty easy to get warmed up in July and this song proved it but to a casual listener the song really connected to the month. That’s probably why the legendary owner of Motown Records owner Berry Gordy Jr.  released this song on July 9th instead of January 9th.

He was a smart businessman back in the summer of 1963
