SUMMER TUNES: SUMMERTIME- BILLY STEWART RELEASED JULY 1966 #10 BILLBOARD HOT 100

summerimgp6529tunes-1It's July 1966-you click on the car radio in your brand new 66 Barracuda and what was playing?

The Beatles would be a great guess but this song was climbing the charts in the summer of 1966.

How about  Billy Stewart's wild opening to this hot summer classic?

Summertime was written in the early 20th Century for Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess but Billy Stewart imposed his own unique musical style in his 1966 cover version.

Stewart had a scat vocal trademark style and he reached his own musical career high water mark with his hit single version of the Gershwin classic.

Unfortunately Billy Stewart died in a car accident four years after the release of his biggest hit but he left behind a great summer song for the ages.

This is what you were listening to on that AM car radio back in that hot summer of 1966...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8OD56xaY_Y
