STAR CAR TUNES ‘VEHICLE’ IDES OF MARCH Released Spring 1970

‘Vehicle’ is a song which would strike fear into the hearts of parents if it was released in 2009. “ I’m the friendly stranger in the black sedan, won’t you hop inside my car?” are not the kind of lyrics which bring magic to the music when you listen to the words in their literal sense.

Actually the song began as a complaint from a real life situation where the song’s creator found himself in an undesirable role as a de facto chauffeur for a young woman when he was a young musician and crazy about the girl.

He described himself as her personal vehicle for her various errands as he and his Valiant convertible drove her “anywhere she wanted to go.” The song hit number 2 on the charts as his musical complaint and declaration of love morphed into a major hit and subsequently a 30 years and still counting marriage to the woman in the song.

Sometimes it pays to make your point when it comes to cars.
