JANUARY 21 STAR OF THE WEEK: 1918 WINTON MODEL 48 7 PASSENGER TOURING SEDAN
The mscc Star of the Day is a nebulous concept and this week was no exception.
There were two ways to go for Star of the Week and both were not exactly household names.
The first runner-up was a 1968 Trabant...Trabants were built under the umbrella of the former Soviet Union. They were brutally tangible evidence that Communism is best left in theory.
The Star of the Week came from the other end of the political spectrum-free enterprise at its finest. This is a 1918 Winton Model 48 7 passenger Touring Car.
Winton built only one kind of car-expensive. This is a classic example of a vehicle so unaffordable that the company quit making cars in 1924.
But they left a great Star of the Week legacy behind.
JANUARY 20 STAR OF THE DAY:A 1967 MUSTANG FASTBACK DEFINES REAL STYLE IN 21ST CENTURY TRAFFIC
This 67 Mustang was in traffic back in 2010 and it sent a real message about style. This is clearly a Mustang but the vehicles around it were pretty generic.
They blur into a mass of unrecognizable metal but the 60s era Mustang is such an icon that 11 year old kids could ID it.
Even though it doesn't need the spotlight this 'Stang is Star of the Day.
JANUARY 19 STAR OF THE DAY-3RD AND 7TH ROUND DRAFT CHOICE MOPARS
Mopar guys pick favorites-the first round draft choices are typically cars like 1970-71 big block Challengers, 68-70 Chargers, Roadrunners and anything with the 426 magic number...whether it's a Max Wedge or Street Hemi.
Second rounders are cars like Dusters and Swingers.
Third round picks are 2nd Gen 67 Cudas like the one in the picture,
A late 7th round pick is a 61 Dodge station wagon...like the other car in the picture.
Ironically these later draft choices will be the cars surrounded by spectators at a car show and today they get to bask in the glow as an mscc Star of the Day.
JANUARY 18 STAR OF THE DAY: A COUNTY MOUNTIE 1966 BUICK WILDCAT-THE PERFECT RUM-RUNNER PURSUIT CAR
Sheriffs typically operate within a budget so stripped down sedans are the order of the day-more so back in the 60s.
Lucky County Mounties had the AM radio option in their cars. Extremely lucky Sheriffs drove cars like this 1966 Buick Wildcat. They were low, wide, comfortable, heavy and powerful-the perfect car to run down moonshiners.
This Star of the Day was at a 2007 car show-moonshiners had a day off .
JANUARY 17 STAR OF THE DAY: JEEP WAGONEER-THE GRANDADDY OF LUXURY SUVS
The Jeep Wagoneer was built long before the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator became the luxury SUV of choice.
Back in the 1960s there was a demand for a more comfortable vehicle-one that had a station wagon ride and function combined with rugged 4x4 potential.
Enter the Jeep Wagoneer. They didn't sell these things at a Chevy Impala clip but the demand kept this forerunner to the luxury SUV in the Jeep lineup from 1963- 1991.
This Star of the Day was seen in traffic back in 2007-it's probably still around.
JANUARY 16 STAR OF THE DAY: A BLANK CANVAS FOR A CAR PROJECT-BUILDING A DREAM FROM REALITY
Most people see the conclusion of a project when they attend a car show. Under that gleaming exterior is this-the blank canvas for the art you see at that show.
To non car guys a group of 1930s cars like this is junk that is well hidden in the back 40 of a farmer's property.
To car guys this is the motherlode-a vanishing motherlode.
That 1934 Olds will be the next star at your local show but this is the starting line. Star of the Day-the project car and the car guys with the natural talent to make them stars.
JANUARY 15 STAR OF THE DAY: 1960 CHEVROLET IMPALA 4 DOOR HARDTOP-IN THE RIGHT PLACE
At first glance, this 1960 Chevy Impala looks like the mirror image of a really nice bowtie because the steering wheel is on the right.
It's not a mix-up in the editing room-this car is in South Africa.
They drive on the right in South Africa and they see real impalas in the wild but this one was corralled in the driveway. This unique Chevy 4 door hardtop was the subject of an mscc story a few years ago and it was cool enough to return as a Star of the Day in 2012.
