DECEMBER 30 STAR OF THE DAY:1957 STUDEBAKER SILVER HAWK-LITTLE DOG WITH A BIG BITE

dec11-30img_1657-1DECEMBER 30 STAR OF THE DAY:1957 STUDEBAKER SILVER HAWK-LITTLE DOG WITH A BIG BITE

Back in 1957 potential new car buyers  typically thought one of three ways during the Elvis era...Ford, GM or Chrysler.

Studebaker was door number 4.

This 1957 Silver Hawk from a 2010 show generates more questions than answers about that period of automotive history.

Questions such as...how could such a distinctive looking car with great performance and low buy-in not draw more interest?

Maybe it was the recession at the time combined with rumors about Studebaker's long term viability. Maybe it was force of habit.

This one had to be an mscc  Star of the Day just to make up for that automotive injustice back in 1957.

DECEMBER 29 STAR OF THE DAY:1967 OLDS CUTLASS-STILL CLASSY IN THE WANING DAYS OF 2011

dec11-29 006-1The 1967 Oldsmobile CutLass is most often prized in its 442 incarnation. That classic muscle car badge is considered to be the high point of Olds history.

This is the lesser model but that doesn't diminish the built-in value of this 45 year old classic. The car has a tough, but luxurious appeal and they aren't exactly common at most car shows so that makes them unique.

This 67 Cutlass was spotted yesterday sitting outside a garage-hopefully it has a bright future.

Even if it doesn't, it's still a great looking Star of the Day.

DECEMBER 28 STAR OF THE DAY: BUILDING A FORD MODEL A ROD THE OLD FASHIONED WAY

This picture could have been taken well over 45 years ago but it was actually shot in the fall of 2011. Most guys took on projects just like this in their back alley in the early 60s.

The whole car was built exactly like it would have been in 1962-with scavenged parts and a serious nod towards improvisation. It ain't pretty but it works,

This Ford Model A is a true old school ride and it'll be featured in the January 2012 Car Stories section.

For now it's an mscc Star of the Day because it's a unique look back at how things were...

DEC 27 STAR OF THE DAY:1969 PLYMOUTH ROADRUNNER CONVERTIBLE-EVOLUTION OF THE FAST BIRD

dec11-27aimgp0531-1The original 1968 Roadrunner was sheer genius in marketing.

Take a stripper 2 door sedan (the kind of car that your grandfather would buy) plunk a big motor in it and add a few off the shelf handling and brake pieces.

Keep the price low and sell by the tens of thousands.

By mid 68 the car had serious curb appeal so the hardtop and other options were added to the Runner option list.

By 69 Mopar knew it had a hit so this 440 convertible option was added to the Roadrunner portfolio and this Star was born.

This shot was taken a few years ago but in the waning days of 2011 it's an mscc Star of the Day.

DECEMBER 26 STAR OF THE DAY-1975 FORD LTD BROUGHAM 2 DOOR

Some observers believe that this car didn't make sense back in 1975. Start with a full sized Ford, eliminate 2 doors and make it less accessible for entry.

They gleefully point out that these LTDs were also thirsty for gas in an era when that started to be a factor.

That doesn't matter-what does matter is that this mid 70s classic is a presence at any car show in the 21st Century because it reflects the times.

People were asking for an affordable, big, solid car with style in 1975 and this Ford LTD made the grade.

It still does on the brink of 2012...this LTD is your mscc Star of the Day.
