DECEMBER 17 STAR OF THE WEEK: THE MERCURY PICKUP...A CANUCK TRUCK

dec11-17jim pix cars etc. etc 192-1DECEMBER 17 STAR OF THE WEEK: THE MERCURY PICKUP...A CANUCK TRUCK

The Mercury truck was a truck that only hosers could appreciate-simply because it was sold north of the border to Canadians.

The Merc truck is something akin to Molson Canadian beer and Hockey Night in Canada because Canucks bought these trucks like they were doughnuts at Tim Hortons.

This great looking example of a hoser-mobile Ford truck was at a show last summer so that explains the clear lack of studded winter tires.

This Canuck truck is so unique it had to be an MSCC Star of the Week.

DECEMBER 16 STAR OF THE DAY: 1957 CHEVROLET EL CAMINO

Astute car guys will pick this off right away-there never was a 1957 Chevy El Camino.

There are, however, car guys who create their own version of the past and this is clearly an example of revised automotive history.

This 57 was the subject of an MSCC piece a few years ago and it still turns heads.

It's a very cool ride, it looks factory and it was a slam dunk Star of the Day.

DECEMBER 15 STAR OF THE DAY: 1960 STUDEBAKER CHAMP- IMPROVISING A GREAT TRUCK

dec11-16Necessity is the proverbial mother of invention and nowhere was that more evident than the 1960 Studebaker Champ.

This truck was born out of necessity because Studebaker needed to continue to maintain their presence in pickup truck-land.

They grafted a Lark car body to a pickup bed and came up with something ahead of its time-a truck with car-like cab comfort.

These trucks were rare in 1960 and unfortunately that makes them nearly extinct in 2011 but this Studie was at a show in June 2011.

That makes this Champ a Star of the Day...look for its full story in 2012.

DECEMBER 14 STAR OF THE DAY: BULLET BIRD-THE FORGOTTEN ERA OF THE FORD...63 THUNDERBIRD

dec11-14bimgp7016-2The term Thunderbird often evokes one mental image-the first Gen 2 seater T-bird. There's no doubt that the 55-57 Bird is an American icon, but that fame often overshadows later versions of the Thunderbird.

The 1961-63 Bullet Bird is arguably one of the most underrated designs in automotive history and part of that may be the spotlight on its famous cousins from the 50s.

Historical perspective is important-Ford was in a styling bloodbath with GM in the early 60s and this Thunderbird signalled the new direction...

It was a great direction and easily made this 63 Bullet Bird an mscc Star of the Day.

DECEMBER 13 STAR OF THE DAY: 71 CHARGER AT SUNSET-CLASS IN TWILIGHT

dec11-12imgp0783-2This Charger was at a late fall show this year and it was a great example of how much earlier sunset arrives as the car show year ends.

This would have been the middle of a sunny evening in June, but in October the sun is gone faster than your cheap buddies when the bar tab arrives.

That's no problem because waning light brings out the best in classic rides like this Dodge Charger...your mssc Star of the Day.

DECEMBER 12 STAR OF THE DAY: 2ND GEN CAMARO...TURNING A CORNER ON STYLE

dec11-12bimgp6540-2Camaros jumped into the pony car wars late but they were on the cutting edge of style from Day 1.

In 1970 the 2nd Generation Camaro debuted-and like the first edition, this Chevy led the way into a new decade.

Here's a 2nd Gen from last summer and it literally turned a corner in traffic in 2011 and styling in 1970.

Star of the Day-the evolution of the 1970s Camaro.
