OCTOBER 9 STAR OF THE WEEK-A CLASSIC 1960 NASH RAMBLER WITH A HOLLYWOOD HISTORY
OCTOBER 9 STAR OF THE WEEK-A CLASSIC 1960 NASH RAMBLER WITH A HOLLYWOOD HISTORY
This car is pretty famous-it has its own Youtube following, it has a Hollywood connection and a very colorful history.
Now it's in the hands of a dedicated average car guy who bought it from another dedicated average car guy-that's the best part if its history.
That what makes this former Hollywood Star an MSCC Star of the Week.
OCTOBER 8 STAR OF THE DAY:1973 CADILLAC AMBULANCE-THERE WHEN YOU NEED IT
Emergency vehicles like this 1973 Cadillac ambulance had one purpose-get there in a hurry. Life support was a lot cruder 40 years ago, so you took a big stable ride like this and launched it down the road with that massive Caddy engine.
It wasn't hi-tech but you can bet that this Cadillac was a life-saving star in the 70s and a current Star of the Day in 2011.
Look for a future MSCC story on this fascinating vehicle.
OCTOBER 7 STAR OF THE DAY-A LOOK BACK AT A VAN FROM 1978
The boogie van was born in the 1970s and this was a picture from the summer of 1978. Typically, a boogie van was a 70s vintage but this example was a refugee from the 60s.
Maybe that explains the "hippie waterfall" graphic and the psychedelic, flower power paint scheme-even if the Summer of Love was 11 years earlier.
It was a great look back to an era when the full-sized van was king...or Star of the Day.
OCTOBER 6 STAR OF THE DAY-THE FORD PICKUP EVOLUTION IN 1957
Sometimes a picture basically writes its own narrative-this is a great example from August 2009.
Ford's pickup look was getting dated by 1956-especially after the new look 55 Chevy debuted in mid-year.
Hang on to the those cards and letters...there's no question that the 56 Ford truck is an icon to this day but the new Chevy pointed the way to the new look of the 50s.
Ford had to counter punch with this new idea-the 1957 Ranchero. It was designed to make car drivers feel comfortable in a truck...not a problem in 2011 but it was a big issue in the Buddy Holly era.
These 2 guys were kind enough to line up at a traffic light to illustrate where Ford was before 1957 and where they headed after that year.
The Star of the Day-the evolution of the Ford truck.
OCTOBER 5 STAR OF THE DAY:A RETIRED IHC-WHERE HAVE ALL THE FARM TRUCKS GONE
This old IHC workhorse did its time on a farm and it ended its career like most farm trucks....in the back 40.
One day this old truck quit working so they hooked it up to a tractor and hauled it into the bush.
A farm retirement for the old corn binder is a far better fate than most endings because farmers are the world's biggest recyclers so this IHC is kept around-just in case. If this truck retired from any other industry it would have been a giant metal cube 20 years ago.
Nobody really celebrates hard working vehicles like this and even fewer people restore them for the show circuit, but today this IHC is MSCC Star of the Day.
OCTOBER 4 STAR OF THE DAY:STREET TOUGH FORD FALCON AN AMT MODEL IN REAL LIFE
Kids in the 60s didn't play video games-they built models. AMT had a 3 in one model that gave you a choice of stock, custom or drag.
Some kids built them stock...we didn't have the term "wimp" at our disposal but any kid who built a stock version of an AMT model earned the mid-60s equivalent title for "wimp".
Other kids went custom-that was okay...no inherent wimpiness in a custom AMT build.
The top of the heap was the drag version-the meanest version in the package.Typically AMT went with a straight axle gasser look in the drag version.
Jim (the other guy at MSCC) had a 65 Ford Falcon AMT model and it looked eerily like this car. He didn't put the mag options on the car, the front end was higher, his AMT model was blue- but he did go with stock dog dish wheels, the Thunderbolt hood, roll bar and the 427 engine. This car is nearly a dead ringer for Jim's long lost AMT model.
That's why he took this picture last year and insisted on Star of the Year status this year.
OCTOBER 3 STAR OF THE DAY- A 1959 PONTIAC CONVERTIBLE SHRUGS OFF WINTER BLUES
This shot was taken just before summer officially ended.
That would be news to the proud owner of this classic 1959 Pontiac convertible because when you own a car like this you are living an endless summer.
Imagine owning this 1950s beauty in the middle of January when the car is hiding from a brutal winter in your garage.
One quick cure for cabin fever...take a look at this car and think about the possibilties.
Your Star of the Day.
OCTOBER 2 STAR OF THE DAY-A HOLLYWOOD FAMOUS 1960 NASH RAMBLER AMERICAN
This car was the subject of an MSCC piece back in 2009 and it's had quite a storied history over the last several years.
It's a tricked out 1960 Nash Rambler American 350, Camaro sub-the list is extensive but suffice to say...it's far from stock.
The car is a star on its own but long term MSCC reader and occasional contributor Dennis Halpin just bought this nasty little Rambler. It's in good hands.Dennis summed up the car best in his own words..."it's just plain ugly fast! It will pass anything but a gas station (and a speed bump) It's a you tube celebrity too, with something like 200,000+ hits."
Ladies and Gentlemen-your Oct. 2 Star of the Day.
