SEPTEMBER 18 STAR OF THE WEEK- A 110 YEAR OLD QUEEN STANHOPE RUNABOUT

SEPTEMBER 18 STAR OF THE WEEK- A 110 YEAR OLD QUEEN STANHOPE RUNABOUT

This was yet another great week for MSCC Star of the Day. It was like a kid's fun baseball league where everybody should win but one old ride stood out in a great lineup.

In an obvious age related pick, this 1901 Queen beat out punks like 1955 Dodge trucks and Meteor Niagaras to win Star of the Week

If life teaches you one great lesson it's this-respect your elders...

SEPTEMBER 17 STAR OF THE DAY- A COUNTRY ROAD AND A 1955 JOB-RATED DEPENDABLE DODGE TRUCKsept11-17aimgp1888-1

This vintage heavy duty Dodge truck popped up out of nowhere last summer on this secluded gravel logging road but for some reason it looked natural even in the 21st Century.

That's because this same type of truck pounded down roads just like this 56 years ago as a serious working partner for farmers, loggers, miners, roughnecks-just about anybody who needed a job-rated dependable Dodge truck.

You easily earn MSCC Star of the Day status with that kind of work ethic.

SEPTEMBER 16 STAR OF THE DAY- 1955 METEOR NIAGARA

Here's another car from the past with serious Canuck roots-it's a 1955 Meteor Niagara. This is the Canadian answer to the entry level Ford.

This one was a basic 4 door sedan but it had one great 1950s touch-fender skirts. That simple option adds a ton of cool to an already cool ride.

There's no evidence that this car came from the factory with the fender skirts, but they were an instant status symbol back in the skinny Elvis era.

It was a great package (Canadian Ford and period correct add-ons) to see on a beautiful summer night back in 2009.

SEPTEMBER 15 STAR OF THE DAY- A 1901 QUEEN STANHOPE RUNABOUTsept11-15bimgp5863-1

The Star of the Day doesn't lock in on any specific automotive name or era-that's why this 110 year old Queen easily made the grade.

This car is an embodiment of the era before evolution in automotive technology-no GPS, MP3, AC,PS,PW,ABS,EFI...just 4 wheels, a rudimentary braking system, steering wheel and, believe it or not-a 3 speed transmission.

They were driven with a wide open throttle so speed was controlled by the spark. Crude but effective and definitely not drive-by-wire.

Queens were built in very small numbers-so small that Jay Leno doesn't even own one.

This one was easy-any 110 year old cars are automatic MSCC Star of the Day material.

SEPTEMBER 14-THE PONTIAC CATALINA...A REAL DEAL SUMMER CAR

The Pontiac Catalina always evoked summer thoughts-it might have something to do with the name. After all, Catalina Island off the coast of California isn't a penal colony. It's a summer vacation spot...hence the song 'Sunny Catalina'.

Pontiac pushed the hardtop and converitble versions of these entry level cars because they wanted to establish a market for younger, care-free buyers...on vacation.

It worked. To this day, the Catalina will always be a sunny day car suited for a trip to the beach, not the grocery store.

The Star of the Day-a summer tradition.

SEPTEMBER 13 STAR OF THE WEEK-1968 TORINO PACE CAR...RIGHT AT HOME IN DAYTONA FLORIDA

sept11-13aimgp1428-2

The 1968 NASCAR season was dominated by David Pearson. He piloted his 1968 Ford Torino fastback to a championship that year thanks to a far better aerodynamic profile than Richard Petty's Plymouth.

The Mercury Cyclone was a first cousin of the Torino and its slippery design helped Cale Yarborough win the legendary Daytona 500 in 1968.

The official 1968 Daytona 500 pace car was a brand new Torino convertible and that's where this tale of Ford glory began.

Star of the Day...in 2011 and 1968.

SEPTEMBER 12 STAR OF THE WEEK-THIS OLD CADDY IS ON A ONE WAY TRIPsept11-12imgp9924-1

When this Cadillac was sitting in a showroom most people envied the kind of guy who could afford such a legendary luxury car.

The Cadillac was at the end of its run as a large North American symbol of affluence at this point but this 2 door example didn't disappoint. It still had that tremendous Caddy presence plus it wrapped its owner in a comfortable and luxurious package.

There's an excellent chance that this former symbol of success was headed for a future as a new fridge because the road it was on headed directly to the local salvage yard.

But that didn't stop it from becoming a Star of the Day...it deserved that..
