JULY 23 STAR OF THE WEEK-A 1960 CHRYSLER, 58 DODGE AND A RAINBOW

JULY 23 STAR OF THE WEEK-A 1960 CHRYSLER, 58 DODGE AND A RAINBOW

This Star of the Week was a combination of factors. The car show was over thanks to a downpour mixed with thunder and lightning that would get your attention in Tornado Alley.

But these 2 fin cars were still there, the sun was breaking through and a rainbow kicked in.

The combination made this scenario a Star of the Week.

JULY 22 STAR OF THE DAY-A RED 1959 CHEVY IMPALA

july11imgp1623-2

This car was leaving a show a few years ago and it really left an impression-every guy in the area turned around to see this blinding red Chevy. That made sense.

The Batmobile 59 Chevy caught a wave in the last decade and the prices soared-before that they were down the list from their more popular Tri-Five cousins...the55-57 era.

That changed and now these iconic cars are in the spotlight.

The MSCC spotlight for Star of the Day.

JULY 21 STAR OF THE DAY-HI TECH IN THE 1940S AUTOMOTIVE WORLD

We take a lot of things for granted in the 21st Century and technology leads the way. Cars and trucks have never been more comfortable and safe to drive.

That wasn't always the case as evidenced by this technology. That big tube hanging out of the passenger window was a crude form of airconditioning and that's what passed for creature comforts in a 1940s vehicle.

It was based on the cooling effect found in the evaporation process-it was marginal relief at best in reality but it looked pretty cool. Maybe that's all it took...a psychological advantage.

Star of the Day-old tech.

JULY 20 STAR OF THE DAY-1968 GTO...PONTIAC'S TOUGH GUY WITH STYLE

The Pontiac GTO debuted the same year as the Mustang-1964. The difference was clear-the Mustang was designed to be a secretary's car (before Shelby raised the bar) and the Goat was born for streetfighting.

The GTO was the 1st affordable muscle car. This accounted for a much higher than average rate of "not living long enough to make the 2nd payment-itis"  among its youthful buyers.

But that was part of the mystique and the GTO led the parade in style every year including 1968 when they went to this coke bottle design.

The GTOs looked tough and backed  it up with a great right hook-this is a slam dunk Star of the Day.

JULY 19 STAR OF THE DAY-A WEDDING CAR FROM 100 YEARS AGO:MODEL T LIMO GETS HER TO THE CHURCH ON TIME

Weddings in the 21st Century  have more built-in planning than D-Day did in World War II. The wedding car is a big factor in the big day. It's probably the only piece in the puzzle (outside of a well-stocked bar) that the groom really cares about on his wedding day.

100 years ago weddings were different-they were a lot smaller, functional and came in well under cost. But what if early 20th Century weddings were as big, over-planned and costly as early 21st Century nuptials?

You'd have a need for a stretch limo and a Model T would have fit the bill-tough, reliable and ready for any job. This T limo is a one-off custom build by a dedicated T guy but if there was a big demand for a limo in  1911 Henry Ford would have pumped these out for willing brides across North America.

Look for the story behind this T Star of the Day in an upcoming story at MSCC.

JULY 18 STAR OF THE DAY-A 1931 HUDSON RAT ROD OPENS UP QUESTION PERIOD

1931 Hudsons are pretty rare in 2011-Rat Rod 31 Hudsons are even rarer and thus begins the debate. Should this car have been restored to its original glory or is this version simply an expression of one man's vision? An homage to a hot rod past where whatever was on hand ended up as part of the project...

There's no question about this Hudson's Star of the Day status because any vintage vehicle that stimulates debate in the world of old iron makes this car a star.

JULY 17 STAR OF THE DAY- MOPAR FIN CARS- 1960 CHRYSLER AND 58 DODGE...SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW

Chrysler put some of the most inspired automotive styling in their lineup during the mid to late 50s.This was an already inspired era for original and incredibly interesting concepts in car design.

The Exner era,as it was called, is rarely seen at car shows in the 21st Century

Except for this one...

A thunderstorm emptied the parking lot at a recent show but these two classic Mopar fin cars were still there just as the rainbow was disappearing. Some might call it Karma, some might call it the aftermath of heavy rain-they're called the Star of the Day.
