Studebaker was in serious financial whitewater by 1963. In fact they were on life support with a guy hovering around ready to pull the breathing tubes on the once proud car maker.

They had one Hail Mary left in the playbook and it came in the form of the Avanti. This was a classic sports car with disc brakes and a great power to weight with the supercharger option.

It wasn't enough to save Studebaker but that last Hail Mary pass they took left a car for the ages.,,

and an mscc Star of the Day from the Summer of 2011.

JANUARY 28 STAR OF THE WEEK- HEY HEY IT'S THE MONKEEMOBILE

jan12-28 weekcar pics 2012 005-2JANUARY 28 STAR OF THE WEEK- HEY HEY IT'S THE MONKEEMOBILE

The 1960s was easily be the best decade in the history of music. Sadly, most people never acknowledged The Monkees as a musical force in that iconic era.

Maybe The Monkees were an acquired taste, maybe you had to be 12 or 13 to really dig what they were laying down but the Monkeemobile is the undisputed champ for rock and roll automotive icons...

with all due respect to the Elvis Caddies and John Lennon's flower power Rolls Royce.

This Monkeemobile knock-off sold recently at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction and it wasn't even close to enough money for this legendary car made for a legendary 60s band.

Rock on Mickey, Davy, Peter and Mike-your car is an mscc Star of the Week.

JANUARY 21 STAR OF THE WEEK: 1918 WINTON MODEL 48 7 PASSENGER TOURING SEDAN

jan12-21bimgp5879-3JANUARY 21 STAR OF THE WEEK: 1918 WINTON MODEL 48 7 PASSENGER TOURING SEDAN

The mscc Star of the Day is a nebulous concept and this week was no exception.

There were two ways to go for Star of the Week and both were not exactly household names.

The first runner-up was a 1968 Trabant...Trabants were built under the umbrella of the former Soviet Union. They were brutally tangible evidence that Communism is best left in theory.

The Star of the Week came from the other end of the political spectrum-free enterprise at its finest. This is a 1918 Winton Model 48 7 passenger Touring Car.

Winton built only one kind of car-expensive. This is a classic example of a vehicle so unaffordable that the company quit making cars in 1924.

But they left a great Star of the Week legacy behind.

The average car guy defines mscc.

The kind of guy who has to analyze every dollar in his beloved ride.

The kind of guy who wrings the most fun per mile out of cars like this classic Dodge Challenger.

Dave Burden is one of those guys so the Star of the Week is the average car guy and his not so average Challey.

JANUARY 7 STAR OF THE WEEK: A 1970 AMC REBEL MACHINE-A BIG PUNCH ON A SMALL BUDGET

jan12-07markpixJANUARY 7 STAR OF THE WEEK: A 1970 AMC REBEL MACHINE-A BIG PUNCH ON A SMALL BUDGET

The Rebel Machine was the AMC answer to the growing muscle battle that peaked in 1970. They didn't have a big budget but they did have creativity-this red, white and blue Rebel packed a hi-po 390 cubic inch motor under the hood.

American Motors slugged it out with the Big 3 on a limited budget and built this automotive legacy behind for the ages.

That history is enough to make this a Star of the Week but this picture from the fall of 2011 sealed the deal-it's one of those "wish I'd taken that shot" moments...
