Sure he’d thought about selling his dream and building a new hot rod-in marriage circles they used to call this the “seven year itch”. Later we’d call it a more sanitized term-the mid-life crisis. The one where guys ditch their 43 year old wives for a 22 year old receptionist/bathing suit model.

In 1993 the car was slated for more cosmetic and driveline surgery. The bondo on the original fenders was starting to show-the net result of a band-aid solution done by an under-qualified technician.

The firewall was painted after Mechanically the Chevy had a new p acemaker installed in the form of an electronic ignition and better cam. The Powerglide was replaced with a 350 Turbo so the car finally shifted better than it did with the slushy Eisenhower era transmission. He also added 605 power steering, disc brakes, alternator, 600 Holley carb, RV cam to give the 56 a decent chance in today’s “grea t brakes in cars but crappy drivers” world.

Dave was happy to learn that the 2 door hardtop style made the car significantly more valuable than a sedan. Not surprising. Dave came from a hard working farm family where the only value from vehicles came from practicality not looks so a 4 door stripper sedan made a lot more sense to a big farm family than something like a flashy car only 2 doors-that kind of car was strictly “city-slicker”.
