WE EXPLAIN WHY NICKLEBACK DOES NOT SUCK....IN OUR HUMBLE OPINION

Nickleback has gotten one of the roughest rides in rock music history and frankly, we don't know why they get beaten up so much. So we are here to defend these small town Alberta boys who have taken too many unjustified shots for their music.

The first thing that people have to understand about rock music is that nobody is going to reinvent it.

It was defined a long time ago when the 60s killed off the Pat Boone sound and let a bunch of British punks amp up the sound to non-elevator music standards. And these shaggy English guys leaned heavily on the Chicago and Mississippi Blues sound that was around long before they played their first gig on Ed Sullivan.

This brief history of rock brings us back to Nickleback. These are just a bunch of small town boys who wanted to play some music and become rock stars. It's an impossible reach for 99.99% of wannabe rockers, but these guys made it happen in a big way.

We like these guys. They play a straight-ahead brand of music that reveals their small town roots. Simple concepts like drinking, fighting and assorted carnal adventures are part of any guy's life in a small town. There are plenty of opportunities for the first two, but the third recreational pursuit is a little rarer.

So Nickleback decided to reminisce in song about their lives in Hanna Alberta Canada. They were not about to take a run at the Beatles or Pink Floyd for cutting-edge concept albums. They just wanted to play the music of their lives- and they led pretty simple lives.

Along the way, they have managed to sell an astounding 30 million records. Maybe that means little to some of their many critics, but 30 million people disagree. Nickleback has managed to stay in the spotlight, despite the fact that so many people have decided to trash them as a musical joke.

We have noticed here in Canada that many of their critics lean toward Canadian bands that never made the grade in the bigger musical world. Here's a newsflash: Bands like Tragically Hip were an overrated product of heavy-handed government legislation that were simply not good enough-no matter how hard you wave a Maple Leaf flag.

But we digress. Nickleback is one of the most successful bands in the history of rock music, so they are clearly doing something right. Even it is tragically hip to mock them in their home and native land. We just wonder why the local boys who made good became targets instead of heroes.

Our best guesses are jealousy, envy or stupidity.
