WANTED:40,000 LADIES OF THE EVENING FOR WORLD CUP OF SOCCER FESTIVITIES

The World Cup is a huge global event for countries that love the other kind of football. Those of us that live in North America call it soccer and most of us do not have a huge love for the game. But we take notice of a game that captures the interest of billions of fellow earthlings, even if we don’t get it.

But maybe the soccer fans have other interests in mind when it comes to the World Cup. The fact that business demands require about 40,000 sex professionals to handle the demand means that soccer fans don’t always fight at soccer matches.

So, as South Africa prepares to host the world, they are also prepared to roll out the red carpet, along with the red lights for World Cup 2010.

The demand for prostitutes seems astounding to outsiders and it raises a few questions.

 

Is the excitement of soccer not enough to keep fans interested in the game itself? Or are many soccer fans just using a huge sports event to further their interest in extra-curricular activities?

The estimate for condoms runs in the order of 1 billion for the World Cup, so the concept of safe sex is at least part of the program for the wayward soccer fans. But the appeal of a major soccer event seems to be based upon a hormonal and beer-fueled party that will either result in romance or a brawl.

So perhaps the 40,000 hookers are there to provide a buffer zone for frustrated soccer fans that might otherwise choose an international blood-fest when things go wrong for their team and country.

There is no easy answer for the thriving prostitution trade during the World Cup.

But one thing is crystal clear: Business will be brisk for the oldest profession in the world.
